Key Summary Points of the new Burning Ordinance 2007-7 passed Nov. 5, 2007

  • This Ordinance does not apply to indoor heating units using coal, gas, clean wood, fuel oils, white gas, propane, sterno, as fuel for heating purposes.
  • Only wood products may normally be burned, fires shall be attended at all times until completely extinguished, and if a fire creates a nuisance or fire hazard as determined by the police or fire personnel, it shall be immediately extinguished.
  • No burning shall be conducted during unfavorable meterorological conditions such as temperature inversions, high winds, air stagnation, etc.  
  • The Town will comply with any "NO BURN" orders that are issued by the Warrick County Government
  • Fires celebrating school pep rallies and residential maintenance fires during times and in areas designated by the Town Council to dispose of leaves; wood resulting from pruning;and wood broken away from trees as a result of weather conditions so long as the wood burned is three (3) inches or less in diameter at the largest end thereof DO NOT REQUIRE A BURN PERMIT. Fireplaces, fireplace inserts, woodburners for heating purposes and gas and charcoal grills,and fires conducted by Town Employees are also exempted from requiring a Burn Permit.
  • ALL other fires permitted by the Ordinance shall require a "Burning Permit" AT LEAST TWO (2) DAYS PRIOR- such permits are issued by the Chandler Police Department. There is no fee for a Burn Permit.
  • Violations:  first offense: $50.00, Second offense within a 24 month period: $250.00, Third offense within 24 months: $1,000.00, Fourth or any subsequent offense within 24 months: $2,500.00
  • Fires from the burning of natural growth from clearing operations require a permit at least ten (10) days in advance and also require a liability insurance of at least $1,000,000 dollars, more information is available through the Police Dept.
